EDmin: Total Reader (TR) is a tool for measuring and improving a student’s reading levels from grades 3-12. This application is web-based and requires no software installation on a school server or local computer. Students choose and read age-appropriate Lexiled passages, each with a series of omitted words, called cloze items. For each omitted word (which is representative of the text’s overall Lexile measure), the student sees four possible substitutions; by clicking a word, the student fills in the text and can continue reading. The cloze item is presented within the context and flow of the reading passage; the student need not stop or move back and forth between a separate answer page and the passage. The reading passages and their associated cloze items are referred to as testlets. After a student completes an initial set of testlets (the equivalent of 40 cloze items), Total Reader produces a Lexile measure. All subsequent testlets completed will monitor the student’s Lexile measure and report the new measure when change occurs. This way, Total Reader continually generates updated Lexile measures and students are always aware of their reading range. The system records and represents progress in a series of reports.

myON® partnered with MetaMetrics to build the myON assessment engine that enables student reading ability to be reported as a Lexile measure. Lexile measures in myON reader support differentiated instruction by allowing teachers to assign books and other materials targeted to students’ unique ability levels that will provide the right amount of challenge to promote reading growth. They also help students take more responsibility for their reading progress—from the initial placement test to the subsequent benchmark quizzes—by encouraging independent reading and allowing them to track their growth through a trajectory report that can also be accessed by teachers and parents.

Pearson/Longman/Prentice Hall: MyReadingLab is a program specifically created for developmental reading college students. It is an online application that combines diagnostics, practice exercises, tests and powerful assessment to help improve student reading skills and reading level. The Lexile system in MyReadingLab diagnoses a student’s reading ability over time. Based on a carefully developed diagnostic, students are assigned an initial Lexile measure. Then, using a combination of “cloze” questions and combined skills exercises, MyReadingLab tests students’ reading comprehension. As students read additional selections and take additional diagnostic tests, their scores are incrementally adjusted based not only on their scores on the specific diagnostic test but also by their history in the Lexile system. This approach allows students to increase their Lexile measure and monitor their progress over time. Instructors can manage their students’ reading comprehension and encourage their progress.
